How did you play with Barbie?

Seriously

Are you a nanny, housekeeper, gardener or other domestic worker? Do you like zines?

gaggedandcollegebound:

Hi, my name is Maddie, and I am looking for people to submit written work about their experiences with domestic labor for a zine I’m creating. The zine is yet untitled, but I want it to talk about the motivation for going into domestic work, the class differences between the workers and their…

i-had-lost-my-mind: hey I'm a student in England, and I'm currently doing an extended project on the history of feminism, and what it means to us today. As part of my research I want to collect data on what feminism means to feminists today. In order to do this I have compiled a online survey. I cant send you the link here as tumblr doesn't let you put links in 'asks' however if you click on to my blog the link is in the first post.

I would be very grateful if you could fill it out, it shouldn't take too long! Thank you if you do :)

Will do!

Do you remember doing anything violent to your Barbie dolls?

I beat the crap out of them constantly as a young child. Not because I hated them, but because it was good drama. One Barbie would get kidnapped and tied up and the others would have to rescue her, or one would commit a crime and she’d get death by hanging. And they constantly resorted to physical violence to settle their differences. It was a rough life.

What kind of Barbie accessories did you own?

I had many different types of transportation: corvette, RV, airplane, boat and a crapload of horses. I also had a lot of food; the Barbie food sets were so neat! I still have this kickass little toaster where you press the button and the plastic toast comes flying out at 50 mph. We used it as a projectile weapon.

Anonymous: I liked to make my Barbies be lesbians. I had a Ken, but I rarely played with him. Seeing 'Barbie and Ken' advertised seemed boring to me, yet none of my friends could relate. I was under ten-years-old and grew up in a village where I hadn't ever met a gay person, nor seen it on TV, yet I knew I preferred seeing two girls together. I think I donated Ken to my brother, who drowned him in the bath. - Frankie, 19

What was the occupation of your favorite Barbie?

I liked biker Barbie. Then again, I mostly had the generic dolls which I then paired up into couples who didn’t really have professions… Just a bunch of lesbian dolls… I did have one Ken doll. He was the cook who I dress in Barbie’s clothes… That wasn’t a sign or anything.

Did you ever cut your Barbies’ hair? If so, how did you feel about the dolls once you did so?

When I was very little I cut skippers hair and immediately regretted it.”

When did you stop playing with Barbies? Why did you stop?

I stopped in the early years of middle school. It just got embarrassing to play with them and I found other things to do. Also I think that my first digital camera had a lot to do with it. No matter how well you set them up with a scene they just look boring and bland when photographed.”

Has playing with Barbies as a child affected who you are today?

"I think I probably have a ridiculous love for long hair and attribute it with people being more attractive even when they really aren’t. Believe me I have been like "WOAH THERE!" after people cut their hair."
